Tech-Ed 2011

Recently, I attended Microsoft Tech-Ed 2011 from 23rd March - 25th March. Microsoft Tech-Ed is the primarily technical and networking event for tech enthusiasts which is mainly focused on current and upcoming or latest Microsoft releases such as technologies, tools, platforms and services. Tech-Ed held at the The Lalit Ashok Hotel , Bangalore. I didn’t think that I will be attending the Tech-Ed 2011 this year but my manager has opted me even I was busy with my some of project deliveries. But, I finally managed got it (Thanks to my manager and team mates for th support).

I started from my home at 10 AM and reached The Hotel Lalit Ashok at 11.15 AM, I thought it was too early, but sorry, I was wrong, too many techies are already roaming around. I did my registration along with my office mates first and looking forward to attend and make it fruitful.

There was a session on "The NextWeb". Which was very interesting session from tech evangelist Harish Ranganathan. The NextWeb is upon us and this track brings you the latest from Microsoft Web platform. Get in-depth coverage on ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, Internet Information Services (IIS) and Windows Server AppFabric (I am not sure what is this :P). This session was useful if you are interested in taking ASP.NET development to the next level, or finding out how you can use your .NET development skills to build world-class web applications.

One of the sessions I attended is; for the Web developers & designers alike, for creating a more beautiful web using HTML5 and IE9. This HTML5 session is all about new HTML5 tags and the improvements they made in HTML tags and its usage. How effective in terms of performance etc. Also there was a lot of debate and comparison on IE9 with Google Chrome and FireFox browsers.

There was a session on "What’s new in ASP.NET MVC 3". The presenter was Chris, who was very slow and less expressive kind of guy. He talked about many changes introduced in ASP.NET MVC 3, including the addition of the Razor view engine and better support for dependency injection. He demonstrated, how to take advantage of ASP.NET MVC 3 by showing us how to build the software behind NerdDinner.com and extended that to an e-commerce with an AppStore.

I wanted to know what's new in the .NET 4.0 runtime or which Data Access Methods should I use where? So, therea a specific session on this topic called "Code Dev" which I attended. There were two guys taking the session very interestingly. But unfortunately it was not so useful as much as I expected as we are already using in out Respond. But I was there till the end expecting something useful input from them.

There was my most interesting and useful session "Improving Web Applcation Performance using Native Output Caching in IIS 7". In this session Praveen Srivatsa explained how we can reduce Web application response time by leveraging native HttpCacheModule in IIS 7.0 that stores all application outputs in Kernel mode cache. This session covers enabling and configuring user-mode and kernel-mode caching by creating new output caching rules in config and through the IIS Manager GUI. [I will add an article on this later.]

Another session I attended was "jQuery and AJAX Control Toolkit". This talk was about the client-side story for ASP.NET developers, including a look at jQuery, jQuery UI, the AJAX control toolkit with jQuery integration. How can we make server calls using JQuery and how can we update the server side object using JQuery and more on that.

There was a session on "Web Deployment using VS 2010". How msbuild and WebDeploy work under the covers to helps the development team make regular and pain-free updates to the staging / production servers. How to package up web apps in .zip files, deploy them using UI, or command file, move their settings and databases easily and much more.

Also in the last day a session on "Deep Dive: MVC Controller Architecture". The MVC architecture and its details and the infrastructure of the controller and much more.

Also Had a nice discussion Technical Discussion with a folk from Microsoft Annop Mahasudoon, the technical evngelist about Client App Dev MVP.

I have talked about the technical sessions those were attended but now I will just explain about the other stuff happened around. There were many stalls (approx 25 no.s) kept from many organizations including Microsoft, Accenture, Infragestics, IBM, Intel, PluralSight, Telerik, DataGalaxy, Capgemini and many more... There were some quiz competitions going on in some of the stalls (tried in some but disappointed).
There was "KINECT" stall, which I enjoyed well waching others play there.

The lunch hours were piteous for me. Thats because of the long long queues in full sunny noons. The lunch was served with good food but the only concern was long queues in full sunny. In the evenings, after all the technical sessions are over, there used to be some tech innovations from different people. They used to present them in entertaining way. Which used to be good. But I have attended only for 1st day. In the last day, a keynote speach from The Great Anil Kumble for an hour. He shared his thoughts, suggestions and experience with all of us.

Overall, it was a good experience and home every tech guys should experience this kind if technical events. It was an awesome and great to be there at Tech-Ed. Thanks to my manager and the team for the support during the Sprint time.
